Question: What is the Global Youth Empowerment Fund?

Answer: A partnership of JCI and the SDG Action Campaign (formerly the UN Millennium Campaign), the Fund will offer grants, financing and training to youth-led projects and social enterprises that advance the Global Goals for Sustainable Development in local communities around the world.

Question: Who can apply for grant funding from the Global Youth Empowerment Fund?

Answer: A Fund applicant must be focused on community development through the framework of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Only JCI Local Organizations and youth-run registered non-profit organizations may apply for a grant:

  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and non-profit private bodies whose activities contribute to the promotion of sustainable development and youth leadership;
    • Examples include: JCI Local Organization, SDG Action Campaign partners, youth-run registered non-profit
  • Public bodies with specific responsibility for the promotion of youth engagement in advancing the Global Goals for Sustainable Development

For this Fund, “youth” is defined as ages 18 to 40.

Question: What criteria do projects need to meet in order to be considered for funding?

Answer: Projects must meet several requirements, including:

  • Demonstrate community impact and project planning criteria in line with the JCI Active Citizen Framework [hyperlink]. The JCI Active Citizen Framework is a planning mechanism for community-based organizations to identify their community’s greatest needs and align their projects to the global development agenda creating both local and global impact.
  • Adhere to the goals of JCI and SDG Action Campaign in developing grassroots projects that advance at least one of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development [hyperlink] through the JCI Active Citizen Framework.
  • Include like-minded community partners who agree to support the applicant’s project. Types of partnership can include financial support, in-kind support or marketing and communications support.
  • Include plans for organization’s own support of the project, including both financial (e.g. fundraising or sponsorship acquisition) and non-financial (e.g. volunteer hours or in-kind sponsorship) support. The applicant organization is expected to supply at least 50% of the value of the requested funding in their own support.
  • Have mechanisms for monitoring and evaluation and follow-up after funding has been dispersed. All funded projects must submit the required project updates and final reports.

Answer: The Fund will accept submissions during an open call once annually. Applicant organizations must submit project proposals using the Fund’s grant management system, including plans for partnership, financial support, project management, monitoring and evaluation, and demonstrating alignment to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development and the JCI Active Citizen Framework. Upon conclusion of the open call period, applicants will be reviewed and the finalists selected will undergo a week-long public voting process worth a portion of the final project evaluation. The Board of Trustees will review submissions and award grant funding up to US $5,000 to a select number of organizations, depending on funding availability and strength of applications.

Question: How much funding can an organization apply for?

Answer: Each organization can apply for up to US $5,000 during a 12-month period.

Question: When will recipients receive the grant funding?

Answer: Each recipient organization will receive 25% of grant funds upon acceptance of its project. These organizations will be required to submit a final report demonstrating impact prior to receipt of the remaining 75% of funding.

Question: Who will administer the Fund?

Answer: The Fund will be administered and managed by JCI World Headquarters in close collaboration with the SDG Action Campaign and under the strategic direction and support of the Fund’s Board of Trustees.

Question: Where will the funding come from?

Answer: The Fund will accept contributions from external sources — including businesses, foundations or governments — as well as individuals. JCI and the SDG Action Campaign will seek partnership and support from a variety of organizations and individuals to meet both financial and non-financial needs. Click here to contribute.

Question: What organization will manage the Fund?

Answer: Donor contributions will flow to the JCI Foundation (a registered 501(c)(3)) and will be held therein as restricted funds until being released to the recipient organizations.

Question: When will the Fund begin accepting applications?

Answer: The Fund is currently accepting applications on May 1, 2019.
